Project Scope

To identify and analyze the factors which favor the invasion of common weed (Phrag) in the three impoundment systems at Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, to develop a series of controlled experiments that would pinpoint the most effective strategy for its eradication and management, and to establish a Phragmites related eco-hydro-geochemical on-line database.

Project Goals

Phase 1.

Year 1998-1999.
Establish baseline conditions for the East Pool prior to tidal enhancement. Establish an initial database.     Design and implement experiments that would test different management strategies for the control of Phrag.

Phase 2

Year 2000
First year post-treatment monitoring, document and compare initial changes induced by the different experiments

Phase 3

Year 2001 to 2002.
Second and third year post treatment monitoring. Document and compare changes induced by the different experiments to identify the most effective strategy for Phrag eradication. .

Phase 4

Establish management protocols based on results of this study. Establish the on-line database from the study. Year 2002 and beyond.
