ENV 350 Environmental Toxicology

biological and health effects of pollutants

The course provides fundamental information concerning the effects of environmental toxicants on living system. It includes the nature, the adverse effects, the biochemical actions and the detection of all types and forms of toxicants in the living system and the ecosystem, as well as its application to human health issues. The course concerns four aspects: 1) the basic principles of environmental toxicology and the contemporary issues related to human health and ecosystem health; 2) the occurrence, fate and transport of major pollutants in the environment; 3) the basic biological processes and physiochemical mechanisms through which toxicants exert their effects in humans and other species; 4) the concepts and applications of both the ecological and the human health risk assessment pertaining to environmental pollution. Environmental toxicology is a multidisciplinary science that encompasses several diverse areas of study and is one of the most rapidly growing branch of study.
