Fall 2007

RUF members Pete Coach, Christian Arenas, Vicky Raimundo, Steve Richardson, and Dan Wadlinger started out the fall season by going to Rochester, NY for the 10th annual Zodiac Tournament. Like a hat tournament, teams are based on your zodiac sign. With these teams, there were two days of game play to decide which sign was superior. Unfortunately, non of the RUF members’ team made it to the final round, but Steve Richardson’s team, Libra, placed 3rd in the tournament. The RUF members said they had a blast and with next year’s tournament is set in Ontario, Canada, they are already making plans to attend it. For more information ask one of the RUF members or go to http://grada.org/tournaments/zodiac/archive/2007/ , or visit www.upa.org and keep an eye for Zodiac 2008/Zodiac XI.

With Zodiac done, RUF was invited to Rider’s Princeton campus, Westminster Choir College of Rider University, for their homecoming. There, RUF played in their homecoming game. There, a few of the new members got a taste of RUF’s spirit. RUF came out on top and both campuses hope that this can be an annual encounter between them.

RUF’s next tournament was close to home at TCNJ. TCNJ was the very first tournament RUF went to back in 2005 when RUF was just starting out. This was their 3rd TCNJ tournament since then. In their first day of game play, they played Drew University, John Hopkins, and Villanova. Although RUF was in a tough pool to begin with, that didn’t stop RUF from having their signature look with painted faces and spray painted hair. Everyone played their hardest. New members got to see how competitive and fun tournaments are. RUF was placed in the running for the Trumpionship for the 2nd day of game play. Here, they faced their friends Middletown and Rowan University. Despite losing to both teams, games where close and was a valuable experience.

Back in Rochester, NY, RUF participated in Dance Macabre, a spirited tournament in tribute to Halloween. RUF went in camouflage in hopes the opposing team would lose them on the field. First team RUF played was UConn in their orange shirts stating they don’t do costumes. 2nd team was RIT in their elf costumes followed by RIT Alumni in their Santa costumes. The last team was dressed up as Colgate University in spite of Colgate because they were their rivals. Unfortunately, their true identity is forgotten. Games were played hard were a lot of fun. On the 2nd day, RUF received a by the first round and the 2nd game was played against Albany. Battling through the elements, RUF didn’t go down without a fight. Even when the weather decided to HAIL, RUF battled through the points. The game was close, but Albany came out on top.

During Parents Weekend, many RUF members could not attend the tournament in Susquehanna, PA. The few RUF members that could go asked the help of some Middletown members to join them. RUF ended up playing savage for five games. They played Millersville, Shippensburg, UPenn, Johnstown, and Susquehanna. Each game RUF played went to the very last second and over. It always ended up going to the hard cap at the very end and unfortunately, it was the reason why each game was lost. Each team congratulated RUF for a hard game played and each team commented that if RUF wasn’t savage, it would have been a different outcome.

Manhattenville’s tournament was a proud day for RUF. RUF powered through Manhattenville, Ramapo, and Steven’s Institute of Technology to make it to the championship round of the tournament. Tired, but full of excitement and adrenaline, RUF played their hardest in attempt to place first in the tournament and take home a trophy. Fatigue and injures overcame RUF during this last game and lost to Manhattenville. Although 2nd place isn’t 1st place, RUF was happy to come back home with some wins under their belt.

The ABC tournament at Adelphi University was for new teams, or teams that had a lot of new members. The idea was to allow veterans of the team to teach the new members the ins and outs of the game in a tournament atmosphere. RUF brought a few of their veterans along with most of their new members. Here, the new members learned some new plays and re-enforced basic skills. Although they lost the games, everyone played their hardest in the cold and wind and the knowledge they obtained proved valuable for the future of RUF.

The final tournament of the season was hosted by Middletown. It was a midnight indoor tournament held at the GoodSports USA Allaire in Wall Township, NJ for Middletown’s member Kenny for his birthday. Here, RUF faced Montclair, Middletown, and the joint team of Ramapo and Rowan. Playing on turf fields against friends allowed RUF to end the Fall season on a happy note and expectations of a great Spring season.

More Bids

This is Gloves again with more tourney news. We have received two more bids, one form NYU and the other from Stony Brook Ultimate. We have not gotten an official bid from Montclair so there is still technically one open spot left. At this point in time it is probably safe to say that Montclair will be the ninth team to enter the tournament, but there is a possibility of another team snatching up the spot.
